DIASPORA | The Passport Is the Relationship: What Renewal Asks of Jamaicans Abroad

For a Jamaican in Brooklyn, Brixton or Toronto, the passport is often the only piece of the Jamaican state they touch in a decade. The renewal process is not an administrative footnote, then. It is the entire lived experience of citizenship abroad.

The Jamaica Information Service has published a walkthrough of what adult renewal now asks for — documents, timelines, and the points at which applications most often stall.

It is carried here for an unglamorous reason. Service journalism is the least celebrated thing a newsroom does and among the most forwarded, and for a diaspora reader this is the item that gets sent to a parent. It also dates slowly, which is what an archive is for.
