Ainsley got into the food distribution business in February 2020, and by June 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, he began Taste Jamaica in response to the dearth of Jamaican products that were on the market in the Toronto area. He conducted a market research which revealed the fact that Jamaican snacks and treats would do well in the target market area.

“I’ve always had an affinity for Jamaican food. Call it being a “foodie” or just being craven for lack of a better term, I always had a patty and coco-bread in my left hand with a honey bun and cheese and box juice in my right hand.

As a youngster, I would literally sneak out of my parents house to buy Honey Bun and cheese and banana chips. This was ‘feel good food’ for me," Ainsley said.

Realizing that there was a need for more authentic Jamaican products in stores within the Greater Toronto Area, in the midst of the pandemic, Ainsley partnered with his brother, Sean Deer, owner of Yahweh Distributors Limited, to distribute pocket rum cakes and other novelty treats within the GTA.

He wanted to test how customers would respond to the rum cakes within Canada and to see what other items we could supply to these stores. I immediately started to do my research,” the young entrepreneur said.

“The shelves were very scanty! I didn’t even realize that there was a supply chain crisis, so I was thinking that we needed almost every type of Jamaican snack.

In September of 2020, we tested the market with our buccaneer rum cakes and it was well received by our Caribbean contingent.”

“I thought that if I could replicate what I did for the Rum Cakes with other products, then I would be the next Grace Kennedy,” he laughed.

After partnering with Mother’s and Devon House Bakery to import their products into the Canadian market, I decided to launch our online marketplace, Taste Jamaica™  as a means of delivering our niche and authentic products directly to customers all over North America.

“When we launched Taste Jamaica™ in January, 2021, we literally had 2 stores that we supplied our products to, a couple online customers, less than 100 Instagram followers, and a vision to be a household name within the North American, Caribbean, and United Kingdom markets.

“Sometimes it’s surreal to think that we have grown our Business to Business (B2B) customer base to over 40 stores, dropship our products to over 100 Direct to consumer households within North America, and amassed over 8,000 Instagram (IG) followers.

“We have also launched our own Taste Jamaica™ Product line (banana chips, tamarind balls, juices, coconut biscuits, and soups), and opened a Jamaican arm of our business in Kingston," Ainsley posits.

However, he admitted that “none of this would have been possible without my staff June Deer (Marketing Executive), Simone Gordon (Sales and Procurement Manager), affiliated partner (Sean Deer, owner of Yahweh Distributors Limited), affiliated contractors and most importantly my loyal customer base.

So far, It’s been an incredible ride replete with some incredible highs and some agonizing lows. I’m most grateful for the journey,” the young entrepreneur concluded.

Today, Taste Jamaica™ is carving its own niche in the market of the overseas distributive trade, establishing itself as a brand to be reckoned with in the Jamaican Diaspora.
