JAMAICA | Government Adjusts Island-wide Curfew and other Measures to Contain COVID-19

KINGSTON,  April 9, 2020 - Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced several measures including adjustments to the daily island-wide curfew during the Easter weekend to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The Prime Minister’s announcements came yesterday at a press conference to update the nation, on the latest decision of Cabinet on COVID-19.

According to Prime Minister Holness, all the measures taken by the Government are intended to ensure that the country can quickly rebound and recover economically.

“The stay-at-home orders are designed specifically to limit unnecessary movement of people which will limit the movement of the virus. The virus cannot move around on its own; if we limit our movement, we limit its spread,” said Prime Minister Holness.

The announcements include adjustments to the Stay in Place Order (curfew); opening hours for markets; and closure of places of amusement among others. 

Stay in Place Order before Easter
  • From 8 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, to 6 am Thursday the April 9,2020.
  • From 8 pm Thursday, April 9, 2020, to 7 am on Friday, April 10, 2020.
Easter Weekend
  • For Friday, April 10, 2020, through Monday April 13, 2020, the curfew will commence at 3 pm and end at 7 am the next morning. In other words, the non-curfew hours are 7 am to 3 pm daily over the Easter Weekend.
  • On Tuesday April 14, 2020, the curfew will end at 5 am.
After Easter Tuesday April 14 to Tuesday, April 21. 
  • Nightly curfews from 9 pm to 5 am commencing on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 and ending on April 21, 2020. 
  • Markets will be opened from 6 am to 7 pm instead of closing at 6 pm on Thursday April 9, 2020.
  • Markets will be opened form 7 am to 2 pm on Saturday April 11, 2020
  • After Easter markets will be opened from 6 to 2 pm on Mondays to Wednesdays and 6 am to 6 pm on Thursdays to Saturdays. 
  • Markets will be closed on Good Friday April 10, 2020, Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020, and Easter Monday, April 13, 2020. This includes markets, market districts as defined, and this would include all areas of transportation hubs where there is vending and the Arcades. 
Beaches and Places of Amusement
  • All beaches will be closed over the Easter weekend from Good Friday, April 10, 2020 to the Easter Monday, April 13, 2020. Rivers and falls, and other similar water bodies are restricted and, places of amusement will remain closed
Other Measures
  • With effect from the 8th to the 21st of April 2020, persons 70 years and over and persons who are ill with flu-like or respiratory symptoms, shall remain at their place of residence, except that they may leave their premises once per day for food, medicine and other necessities of life.
  • Prime Minister Holness stated that during the period from the 8th to the 21st of April 2020, Jamaicans are strongly encouraged to wear a mask that is fitted to cover the nose and the mouth while in public places.
  • Schools will remain closed until April 22, 2020.
Prime Minister Holness noted that the Government has considered certain protocols by which they would allow re-entry on the island and prevent additional imported cases.
