Havana, Jan 22 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Friday lauded the work of Cuban scientists who, despite the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, are developing vaccines against Covid-19.
On his Twitter account, the foreign minister highlighted the creation of capacities to produce 100 million doses of one of the Cuban vaccines under clinical trials, known as Soberana 02, which will guarantee the immunization of the Cuban population and will support the fight against the pandemic in the world.

He added that Cuban biotechnology overcomes the continuous suffocation of the US blockade with the purpose of guaranteeing health and saving lives.

This week, the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), which is developing the Soberana 02 vaccine candidate, informed at a press conference that Cuba was getting ready to manufacture the vaccine in sufficient quantities to meet its own needs and to supply other nations.

IFV General Director Vicente Verez noted that the administration of the vaccine in Cuba will be free and it is intended to immunize the whole population this year. He emphasized that Cuba's strategy for the commercialization of the vaccine is a combination of humanity and impact on world health, because the financial objective is not the number-one reason, but to improve health.

On Monday, Soberana 02 began its expanded Phase II of clinical trials, which will be extended to 900 people between 19 and 80 years of age.

Following the results of this stage, the third phase will start, in which 150,000 vulnerable people and residents of high-risk areas are expected to be included to evaluate the vaccine's efficacy.
