JAMAICA | Holness Urges Personal Responsibility in fight against Covid-19

KINGSTON, March 3, 2020 - Prime Minister Andrew Holness is urging Jamaicans to take personal responsibility for their own health through hygienic practices, this in the wake of the rapidly spreading Covid-19. The Prime Minister underscored that despite the virus having not yet reached Jamaican shores, there is a possibility that it may, as it is already in the Caribbean region.In that regard, Prime Minister Holness stated that the virus is highly contagious, and Jamaicans should take great precautions against it.In the meantime, the Prime Minister encouraged best practices such as; washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for a minimum of 30 seconds, using alcohol based hand sanitizers, coughing and sneezing into the bend of ones’ elbow, avoiding contact with those suspected of having any kind of flu-like symptoms and maintaining a distance of approximately three feet.The Prime Minister further expressed that though the hope is that Jamaica will be spared, the Government remains committed to protecting the health and welfare of all Jamaicans. He noted that the appropriate facilities have been established, and that the Government will do everything in its power to ensure Jamaica is adequately prepared, including making additional budgetary allocations should this become necessary. -30-

IMF Concerned about Impact of COVID-19 Virus on World Economy

RIYADH, February 22, 2020 - Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ms. Kristalina Georgieva today sounded a note of caution to G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Riyadh, that the global health emergency caused by the COVID-19 virus needs global cooperation in order to be contained.
