KINGSTON, Jamaica September 10, 2014 - The body of the late Agriculture Minister Roger Clarke arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport on Wednesday afternoon and was met by his wife Sonia, members of the Cabinet and officers of the People's National Party, led by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller as well as other officials including former Prime Minister P. J. Patterson.

Roger-3aThere was hardly a dry eye among the the large gathering of  Cabinet Ministers, Government officials, and family members in attendance as the casket, draped in the Jamaican flag, was carried by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) past the honour guard formed by members of the Cabinet  and other  mourners, from the airplane to the hearse on the tarmac.

The members of the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, and other members of the PNP raised their voices in song, belting out renditions of various popular hymns of praise and worship as the casket was placed in the hearse.

Minister of Education of Education, The  Rev. Ronald Thwaites offered prayers, after which the Lord’s prayer was recited. Former Prime Minister, the Most Hon. P.J. Patterson, who was in attendance, described the event as a “very sad occasion”.

Roger2aMembers of the public will be able to pay their respect to the fallen PNP stalwart and patriot in certain strategic locations: On September 11, the body can be viewed at the People’s National Party (PNP) Headquarters, 89 Old Hope Road, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., on Friday, September 12, at the Sharon Baptist Church in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon; and the Mannings High School in Savanna-la-Mar, in Westmoreland, between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the same day.

A wake will be held on September 12, at Independence Park, in Savanna-la-Mar.

The official funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 13, at the St. George’s Anglican Church, Savanna-la-Mar, in Westmoreland.  Interment will follow at the family plot in Glen Islay in Williamsfield, Westmoreland.

Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) will perform ceremonial duties for the funeral, which starts with tributes at 10:30 a.m.

Officiating Ministers will be the Rt. Rev. Robert Thompson; Very Rev. Canon the Hon. Hartley D. Perrin, CD; Rev. Fr. Leroy Johnson; Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, MP; Rev. Karl Henlin; Rev. Dr. Wellesley Blair, CD; Rev. Terry Gillette;  Rev. Paulette Wright and Rev. Dr. Garnet Brown, CD.

Mr. Clarke died on August 28, 2014 while returning to the island from the United States, where he had gone for back surgery.
