China, Italy Launch Electromagnetic Satellite to Study Earthquakes

Beijing, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) China on Friday launched in cooperation with Italy its first electromagnetic satellite to study seismic precursors, a step that will help establish a ground-space monitoring and forecasting network.
The launching took place at 15:51 local time, from a center established for these purposes in Jiuquan province.

Known as Zhangheng 1, the satellite weighs 730 kilograms and was put into orbit with a Long March-2D rocket, which also carried another six satellites.

Its objective will be to help monitor the earth's surface, record data associated with earthquakes above six magnitude in China and those above seven magnitude around the world, to identify common patterns in these phenomena, experts said.

Shortly after the operation, President Xi Jinping and his Italian peer, Sergio Mattarella, exchanged messages to welcome the successful launch of the device.
