Millions displaced in Dem Republic of The Congo

United Nations, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) More than two million people were displaced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) last year, twice the number registered in 2016, the Coordination Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported today.

According to that UN agency, an average of 50 Congolese families were forced to flee their homes every hour during 2017.

The number of internally displaced persons in the country increased to 4.49 million people, of whom more than 60 percent are children, warned OCHA.

In addition, it pointed out; such figure represents the largest population of internally displaced people in all Africa.

For this year, the UN humanitarian agencies need $1.68 billion USD to help alleviate the crisis in the DRC. But so far, only three percent of those funds have been received.

According to the United Nations, that country located in the equatorial region of Africa is facing one of the largest and most complex humanitarian emergencies in the world, amid its complex political tensions.
