MONTEGO BAY, St. James,  January 19, 2018 - As part of the State of Public Emergency in the city of Montego Bay and the Parish of St. James,  The authorities have announced changes to the operating hours of businesses in St James.

The Police/Military authority has mandated that  community recreational areas are to be closed by 6:00 pm.

Cook-shops, dry-goods stores and haberdasheries are have been ordered to cease operations at  7:00 pm .

Spirit License premises are to close at 9:00 pm

All petrol stations are to be closed by 10:00 pm.

clubs and fast food outlets, are to close their operations at 12:00 midnight, the police said.

The Police/Military authority  has assured the public that curtailment of activities will be done in accordance with respect to human rights.

They have sought  and encouraged the full cooperation of residents as they seek to restore public peace and general good order and cautioned the public   that violators will be prosecuted.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness yesterday announced a zero tolerance approach to crime and lawlessness in St James and adjoining communities in the wake of the state of emergency.

Figures from the police show  that last year there  were 253 shooting incidents in the parish of St. James, resulting in some 335 murders. More than 90 per cent of the murders committed were gun-related and a large percentage of the murders were also gang-related.
